The courthouse network for Los Angeles DUI cases
Los Angeles County has more DUI courthouses than any jurisdiction in the United States. The specific courthouse where your case is filed depends on the location of your arrest. City of LA arrests are typically filed at one of these primary locations: Airport Courthouse (in Inglewood, for arrests in the LAX/South Bay area), Compton Courthouse (for South LA arrests), Metropolitan Courthouse (downtown LA), Pasadena Courthouse (for Pasadena/Foothill corridor), or Van Nuys Courthouse (for Valley arrests). Each courthouse has its own prosecutors, departments, and local practices that affect how DUI cases are handled.

Los Angeles DMV Driver Safety Offices
There are three DMV Driver Safety Offices serving the Los Angeles area: the Los Angeles Driver Safety Office (El Monte area), the Torrance Driver Safety Office (serving the South Bay), and the Van Nuys Driver Safety Office (serving the San Fernando Valley). The pink Notice of Suspension issued at arrest identifies which DSO handles your case based on your arrest location. The 10-day APS hearing deadline is the same regardless of which DSO: 10 calendar days from the arrest date, or the automatic suspension takes effect on day 31.
You have 10 calendar days from your arrest date to request an APS hearing. This applies regardless of which of the three LA-area Driver Safety Offices handles your case (El Monte, Torrance, or Van Nuys). Missing this deadline means automatic license suspension beginning 30 days after arrest. Have an attorney request the hearing on your behalf, or contact your DSO directly using the information on your pink Notice of Suspension.
LAPD, Sheriff, and CHP DUI enforcement in Los Angeles
DUI enforcement in Los Angeles is conducted by three primary agencies. The LAPD patrols within the city limits, with DUI enforcement concentrated in entertainment areas in Hollywood, West Hollywood (Sheriff-patrolled), West LA, and the Valley. The LA County Sheriff patrols unincorporated county areas and contract cities. The California Highway Patrol enforces DUI on all freeways — the I-405, I-10, I-110, US-101, and SR-2 corridors see consistent enforcement. Sobriety checkpoints in LA are run by multiple agencies and are among the highest-volume in the state.
How Los Angeles County prosecutes DUI cases
The Los Angeles County District Attorney's office (currently DA George Gascón; under litigation regarding his policies as of 2024–2025) handles DUI prosecution across the county, but DUI offers and practices vary significantly by courthouse. The Van Nuys Courthouse is known for relatively standardized DUI offers. The Airport Courthouse serving the South Bay has its own prosecution patterns. Metropolitan Courthouse downtown handles high volume with corresponding consistency. Wet reckless reductions are available throughout the county but require active negotiation and favorable facts. The variation between courthouse practices makes local knowledge particularly valuable.
After an LA DUI arrest: navigating the largest court system
The most immediate step is requesting the DMV APS hearing within 10 days. Identify your DSO from the pink Notice of Suspension (El Monte, Torrance, or Van Nuys). Then identify which courthouse your case will be filed at based on your arrest location — this determines the prosecution team and typical offer range. Arraignment in LA County is typically within 30 days for out-of-custody defendants. Having counsel familiar with the specific courthouse assigned to your case is more important in LA County than almost anywhere else in California, due to the significant variation in local practices.
